Richard Daintree was born in Huntingdon, England in 1832, the son of a prosperous farmer. He was educated at Bedford Grammar School and Christ's College, Cambridge. He came to Australia in 1852 and in February 1854 joined the Geological Survey of Victoria. In 1856 he returned to England for six months and studied chemistry, assaying and photography.
